Dating back over 500 years, the Mercure Southampton Centre Dolphin Hotel is the oldest hotel in the city and still has many original features remain including Britain's largest bay windows. It was host to Jane Austen's 18th birthday party.

The staff were friendly and helpful. The room was large comfortable, clean, quiet and we slept well. The location was just right for our needs.

The fact we were thankfully only staying in the hotel for one night.
My husband and I had the worst night's sleep we've ever had in a hotel. Even though I asked for a nice room, as we were celebrating our wedding anniversary, they put us in a room facing the high street. The pub across the road was so close, we could hear every word said by the patrons who sat outside on benches. The conversations went on until 4 am in the morning along with drunken, manic laughter. When they finally decided to go home, they called Taxis and we could then hear cars pulling up for the next half an hour and doors slamming as they got in. The hotel room was small, cramped and the floor was on a major slope. My husband quipped that he should have brought a skate board, as the floors in the hotel would be ideal for this activity. I understand it's the oldest hotel in Southampton and you would expect creaking floor boards but they need to lower the cost of staying there (we paid £107) to reflect the fact that there is one thing guaranteed by this hotel and that is "you will NOT get a good night's sleep" if you are in a room facing the high street. No-one asked how our stay was, as no doubt they knew it would have been awful, due to the room they put us in. If you value your sleep, do not stay in any of the front rooms of this hotel.
